In today’s world of aesthetic medicine, injectable treatments like Botox and fillers are more popular than ever. And for good reason! They can enhance your natural beauty, restore volume, and give you that refreshed, well-rested look we all love.
But before you book an appointment, there’s one crucial step you can’t skip: vetting your injector.
It’s wild to think that in many states, someone can take a quick one-day course with little to no real hands-on practice and then start injecting Botox and fillers—it’s honestly pretty scary! While Botox is more forgiving, filler is a whole different story. If done incorrectly, it can block blood vessels, cutting off oxygen to tissues and causing serious complications like necrosis (tissue death) or even blindness. That’s why it’s so important to do your homework before choosing an injector!
Just like you wouldn’t trust just anyone with your hair, your brows, or—let’s be real—your morning coffee order, you shouldn’t trust just anyone with your face. Choosing the right injector is the difference between a natural, beautifully enhanced result and an outcome that leaves you wishing you could turn back time.
So, how do you know if you’re in the right hands? Here’s what to ask—and why it matters.
8 Questions to Make Sure You Ask Your Injector

1. What are your qualifications and training?
Why it matters: The world of injectables is a blend of science and artistry. Your injector should be a licensed medical professional—typically a nurse practitioner, physician assistant, registered nurse, or physician—with specific certifications and ongoing training in injectables.
What to listen for:
Advanced certifications in neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) and dermal fillers
Training from reputable organizations (Allergan, Galderma, or Merz, for example)
Continuous education—because aesthetics is always evolving!
Remember: People who are shady or brush over your questions about training and experience are red flags!
2. How much experience do you have with injectables?
Why it matters: Just because someone has a medical license doesn’t mean they’re skilled in aesthetics. You want someone with hands-on experience who understands facial anatomy, proper technique, and how to achieve balanced, natural-looking results.
What to listen for:
Years of experience in injectables specifically (not just in medicine!)
A high volume of treatments performed
Specialization in aesthetic injectables versus occasional experience
3. Can I see before-and-after photos of your work?
Why it matters: A good injector should have a portfolio of real patients (not stock images!) that reflect their personal technique and aesthetic. This helps you gauge their style and see if it aligns with your goals.
What to look for:
Consistent, natural-looking results
A variety of patient ages and skin types
Similar treatment areas to what you're interested in
4. Do you customize treatments based on individual facial structure?
Why it matters: No two faces are the same! A skilled injector assesses your unique features rather than using a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Your treatment should enhance your natural beauty, not make you look like someone else.
What to listen for:
A consultation that includes a facial assessment and discussion of your goals
A tailored treatment plan rather than a set number of units or syringes
An understanding of proportion, balance, and symmetry
5. What are the risks, and how do you handle complications?

Why it matters: Even in expert hands, injectables come with risks. A responsible injector should be transparent about possible side effects and well-trained in managing complications.
What to listen for:
Clear discussion of risks (bruising, swelling, rare complications)
Their plan for handling an adverse reaction (including dissolving filler if necessary)
A focus on patient safety over profit
6. What products do you use, and why?
Why it matters: Not all injectables are created equal! A reputable injector should only use FDA-approved, name-brand products (no shady "Botox-like" alternatives here). Products like Botox/Dysport/etc. and fillers like Restylane/Juvederm/RHA/etc. all must be ordered directly from the company. This ensures that they are actually authentic FDA approved products.
What to look for:
Authentic Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Juvederm, Restylane, or Radiesse
Knowledge of which product is best for your goals (not just pushing the most expensive option)
If the pricing seems significantly lower than other injectors use, this is a red flag! The real stuff is expensive for a reason.
7. What’s your approach to achieving natural results?
Why it matters: No one wants a frozen forehead or overfilled lips. The best injectors follow the philosophy that less is more and prioritize enhancement over drastic change.
What to listen for:
A conservative approach with a “buildable” treatment plan
An eye for facial harmony and proportion
A genuine desire to make you look like the best version of yourself—not like a completely different person
8. What is your follow-up and aftercare process?
Why it matters: A great injector doesn’t just treat and send you on your way. They should provide aftercare instructions and offer follow-ups to ensure you’re happy with your results.
What to look for:
A check-in appointment, especially for first-time treatments
Clear instructions on what to do (and not do) after your appointment
Openness to touch-ups or adjustments if needed
Make Sure to Trust Your Gut!

At the end of the day, your injector should make you feel comfortable, informed, and confident. If something feels off—whether it’s a lack of transparency, rushed consultations, or results that don’t align with your vision—keep looking. Your face is worth it!
